Ceremony and socializing

The Chronicle-Journal
Sunday, January 2, 2011 – 08:00

The annual Queen’s Levee has changed a lot over the years, but it still serves a very practical purpose, say the commanding officer of HMCS Griffon. “The levee, certainly in the Canadian tradition, goes back to the era of New France,” Lt.-Cmdr. John Bell said at the New Year’s Day event. “The governor of New France would invite people to come and greet him on the day of the new year. “In the military, that tradition has continued . . . on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen.”

These days, Bell said, the event is more of a social one. Saturday, members of the public as well as various dignitaries were on-hand in the Griffon’s mess for a meet-and-greet. “It does get people together, it allows some of the citizens of Thunder Bay to have contact with us,” Bell said. “Many would not have another opportunity to have social contact with us.

“It works. We often get people who have no connection coming along,” he said. “It’s good social networking, if nothing else.” Confederation College president Patricia Lang was one of those on-hand for the levee, and agreed with Bell’s statements. “I think it’s a wonderful way to acknowledge the Navy, our heritage, and our future,” she said. The levee also included the traditional Loyal Toast to the Queen, as well as a performance by the MacGillivray Pipe Band.

Home Sweet Home

And we’re back from yet another amazing weekend in Little Canada Minnesota!

Our weekend included a fabulous meet and greet dinner Friday night with several committee members, Thunder Bay-ites and old friends.  Saturday morning started off with our morning concert in Spooner Park and ended with amazing fireworks later that evening. Sunday was the fantastic parade consisting of beautiful weather and energetic crowds ending with an intimate concert on Barb Harkey’s front lawn.

A very special thank you to Taryn and Barb for providing us with such a great meal after the parade and for their continued hospitality throughout the years!

Thank you to all the wonderful Little Canada committee members and volunteers for always making our stay so special. We appreciate all your hard work and effort in order to make these days so successful.
